The Boardwalk Ripple Edged Afghan uses km1 and pm1 stitches. This is a photo tutorial for how to make these stitches.

km1 = knit-make one: Move yarn to back. With left needle pick up thread between last and next stitch inserting front to back. With right needle knit back loop.

pm1 = purl-make one: Move yarn to front. With left needle pick up thread between last and next stitch inserting front to back. With right needle purl back loop.

This is a round ripple with a little vintage twist to it – adding panels of shell and v-stitch. It is a six-point star and can be made in a solid color or with various colors. It can be made as a baby blanket, lap blanket or throw.

The example is made in an Aran weight acrylic yarn, so measurements and yarn requirements are given for that, but the blanket can be made an any weight yarn. Use hook appropriate to yarn weight.

Size: This blanket can be made any size. Five widths are given in the directions.

Materials:
Aran weight yarn
Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc into the ring (12 dc). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around (24 dc). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around (48 dc). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 4: Sl st in space between beginning chain of rnd 3 and next dc. Ch 3 and dc in same space. Skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in space between dc. Repeat the following for the round: skip 2 dc, 2dc in space between dc, skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in space between dc (12 2dc clusters, 12 v-stitches). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 5: Sl st in space between beginning chain of rnd 4 and next dc. Ch 4 and dc in same space. Skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1,dc) in ch sp. Repeat the following for the round: skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in space between dc, skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in ch sp (24 v-stitches). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 6: Sl st in ch sp. Ch 4 and dc in same space. Skip 2 dc, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch sp. Repeat the following for the round: skip 2 dc, (dc, ch1, dc) in ch sp, skip 2 dc, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch sp (12 1ch-v-stitches, 12 2ch-v-stitches). Join with sl st in third ch.

Rnd 7: Sl st in ch sp. Ch 5 and dc in same space. Skip 2 dc, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch sp. Repeat the following for the round: skip 2 dc, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch sp, skip 2 dc, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch sp (12 v-stitches, 12 shells). Join with sl st in third ch.

Repeat rounds 14 and 15 until blanket is desired size. On every 8th round (round 16, 24, etc.) work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in each of the six points. This adjustment will help keep the blanket flat.

Rnds 16, 24 etc. : Sl st in ch sp. Ch 3 and 2dc, ch1, 3dc in same space. Skip 4 dc, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch sp, skip 4 dc, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch sp, skip 4 dc, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch sp, ch 2, skip 4 dc, dc in each dc up to the ch sp, in ch sp work (3dc, ch2, 3dc), dc in each dc up to the last dc before ch sp, ch 1. The blanket can be made in a solid color or can be made with any number of color changes. The best way to make a color change is to complete all but the last slip stitch at the beginning of a round. Cut yarn with a few inches of tail and join with new color next to stitch. Pull new color through for the slip stitch. Weave in ends.

Size H (5mm) crochet hook

sc = single crochet

Special stitches:
dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (uses two stitches, decreases by one stitch) – [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
dc5tog – double crochet 5 stitches together (uses five stitches, decreases by four stitches) – [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 5 times (6 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

The beginning chain should be a multiple of 52 plus 2.

For these widths, start with this number of chains:

71.75″ = 366

After the first row, make all stitches in both loops.

The blanket can be made in a solid color or can be made with any number of color changes. The best way to make a color change is to finish all but the very last pull through of the two loops of the last stitch of a row. Cut yarn with a few inches of tail and join with new color next to stitch. Pull new color through last two loops. Weave in ends.

Pictures don’t do this one justice. The tiny shells are so delicate and ripple adds a little extra complexity to the look.

Repeat rows 5 through 8 until afghan is desired length. End with a row 8 then complete the next three rows.

The blanket can be made in a solid color or can be made with any number of color changes. The best way to make a color change is to finish all but the very last pull through of the two loops of the last stitch of a row. Cut yarn with a few inches of tail and join with new color next to stitch. Pull new color through last two loops. Weave in ends.

This whimsical blanket can be made with selected colors or with scraps on hand for a nice stash busting project. The example has a cream color for the non-“eye” sections, but these can also be made with any number of colors.

The example is made in aran weight yarn.

Size: Directions are given for three widths.

Materials: Aran weight yarn Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
hdc = half-double crochet
sc = single crochet
tr = triple/treble crochet

The beginning chain should be a multiple of 60 plus 2. There is a also a chart available.

For these widths, start with this number of chains:
38.5″ = 122
57.5″ = 182
71.25″ = 242

Row 1: Begin in a non-“eye” color. Skip first 3 ch (counts as first dc), dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch to end of row. Turn.

Row 2: Make all stitches in both loops. Ch3, dc in second dc, dc in each dc to end of row. Dc in top turning chain. Turn.

Row 3: Repeat row 2.

Row 4: Ch4 (counts as first tr), tr in 2nd dc, tr in each of next six dc, dc in each of next two dc, hdc in each of next two dc, sc in each of next six dc, hdc in each of the next two dc, dc in each of next two dc, ** tr in each of next 46 dc, dc in each of next two dc, hdc in each of next two dc, sc in each of next six dc, hdc in each of the next two dc, dc in each of next two dc. Rows 9 and 10: Repeat row 2 for each.

Repeat rows 4 through 10 until afghan is desired length. Fasten off and weave in ends.
