Chevrons and Ladders Ripple Blanket
The ripple of the chevrons is accented by rows of purl stitches. Vertical ladders separate the columns of chevrons. The look of this blanket can be changed by using different fibers and colors. The example is made with worsted weight cotton yarn.

Gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in stockinette
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles

Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
k2tog = knit two together
ssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit.
s2kp2 – slip2 (together, knitwise), k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over
Instructions:
The number of cast on stitches should be a multiple of 25 plus 6 .
Cast on these number of stitches for these widths:
33″ = 181
37.5″ = 206
42″ = 231
46.75″ = 256
51.25″ = 281
Repeat directions between ** across the row.
Row 1: p1, k1, p1, ** k2tog, k8, yo, k1, yo, s2kp2, yo, k1, yo, k8, ssk **, p1, k1, p1
Row 2: p1, k1, p1, ** k10, p5, k10 **, p1, k1, p1
Row 3: Repeat row 1
Row 4: p1, k1, ** p **, k1, p1
Row 5: Repeat row 1
Row 6: Repeat row 4
Row 7: Repeat row 1
Row 8: Repeat row 4
Row 9: Repeat row 1
Row 10: Repeat row 2
Repeat these 10 rows until blanket is desired length ending with a row 9. Cast off with an additional row of knit, finish off, secure and weave in end.
Make color changes before any row 1.
How would I convert this pattern to use bulky yarn? Thanks.
Use 10-1/2 (6.5mm) needles.
These cast ons will have these approximate widths –
35.75″ = 131
42.5″ = 156
49.5″ = 181
56.25″ = 206
63″ = 231
70″ = 256
Buy one skein of bulky yarn and use what ever size needle it says to use. You’ll either go up or down a size. Check your gauge as you get started after casing on about ten stitches and about 20 rows.

I intend to knit the Carnival afghan first and then I have printed the Chevrons & Ladders Ripple blanket pattern for my second project to work on this winter. Your instructions state repeat 10 rows ending with row 19. Did you mean row 10 or row 9?????

I see three colors in the pattern, what are the colors? Also I see a number of yards needed, but how many for each color?
I used Knitting Fever King Tut yarn. The main tan color is their color 5250. I used a medium brown color 524 for the top and bottom stripe and a dark brown color 3600 for the middle stripe. My blanket was 33″ by 35″ with four repeats of the tan divided by one repeat of the other colors. I used 737 yards of the tan, 91 yards of the medium brown and 45 yards of the dark brown.

Hi,I just wanted to say first that your afghans are so very beatiful. I plan on getting a couple of them stitched this winter as I just had ankle fusion last Friday and am in a wheel chair for up to 6 months so I am very happy for your generousity and your website.
The ? I have about this afghan is when do we change colors in pattern.I read the pattern but must of missed it.I am so sorry for bugging you.

Make color changes between row 10 and row 1. I made 4 repeats of tan and 1 repeat of the other stripes, but I think it would look nice any number of ways.
What do you mean by “knitwise”?
Inserting the needle into the stitch as to knit it.
Lovely afgan! Does it need to be blocked when finished, and if so, what method do you recommend? Thanks!
It really just depends on the yarn and if you are happy with how it looks when you are finished. Washing and drying flat should be sufficient blocking if desired.

your chocolate layer cake afghan calls for 180 or 206 stitches
does that mean 31 stitches each time and knit it to the
length I want and then do it again 5 more times
or do you do it on regular needles , because 200 stitches
are a lot on one needle. please get back to me asap

It is designed to cast on all the stitches at once and knit in one piece. I usually use a long circular needle when I knit an afghan.
row 1 doesn’t come out right. If I k2 tog. s2kp2 and ssk, I take off 5 and only put 4 yo’s back on. what am I doing wrong?

Count again, Glenda. You are only dropping 4 stitches in R1.

k2tog combines two stitches, so reducing one
ssk combines two stitches, so reducing one
s2kp2 combines three stitches, so reducing two
so a total of four stitches being reduced and then the 4 yo adding them back.

I searched on Ravelry and didn’t find a lot. The only patterns I found were colorwork patterns and they were in magazines.
I have a lot of DK weight yarn. I figured out that with a gauge of 5.5sts/inch I cast on 319 sets. Is this correct. Thanks.
Sounds like you are going for the extra large size? The repeat of the pattern is a multiple of 25 plus 6, so you will either need to cast on 306 or 331 stitches.
I have attempted this pattern several times. I cast on 206 stitches but when I get to the end of the first row I always have 205. I can’t figure what I am doing wrong.
With the 206 cast on, you would have 8 repeats of 25 stitches and 3 edge stitches on each side. At the end of your first row, check to see if you still have 25 stitches in each of your repeats. I really can’t guess why you would be off one stitch.

Having a slight issue. I have tried stating this twice now and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I cast on 256 stitches. Triple counted the second time to be sure. At the end this time I ended with 264 stitches and I ended with more stitches at the end then I needed for the edge stitch but to few to do another section of the pattern.
I am new to knitting so perhaps I’m reading the pattern wrong. I am supposed to only do the p1,k1,p1 at the very end of the row right? Most of the stitches make sense AND you have explanations written out. I don’t know what I’m messing up here.
You are correct that you only do the p1, k1, p1 at the beginning and end of the row. After each row you should end with the same number of stitches (256). I can’t really guess what is happening because usually something would be in each repeat so with yours having 10 repeats I would expect the stitches to be off by 10 one way or another rather than 8. One thing you can do is to check your stitch count as you go across the row. After the first three stitches, each repeat has 25 stitches – so that it starts with 25 stitches and results in 25 stitches. So as you go across the row, after the first repeat, you should have 28 worked stitches (25 of the repeat plus the 3 border stitches), and after the second repeat you should have 53 worked stitches, and so on with 25 more stitches after each repeat.

Other than the first and last stitches, row 4 is all purl stitches.

If I use fingering yarn to make the lager size casting on 406 stitches, will 3000 yards be enough yarn for it?
It’s difficult to calculate yarn requirements with yarn weight changes, but that sounds like a really good estimate.
To make the medium size with DK weight how many would suggest I cast on? Thanks
Use size 6 (4mm) needles and cast on 256.
I like this pattern but I would like different colors and a bit different color pattern (7 rows 1st color, 7 rows 2nd color, and so forth). Is it possible to have you figure out for me what I need? I can give you all the color specifics but I am not good at figuring out how to order.

That would definitely work. It will have a slightly different look but would still work for the pattern.
