Diamond Chicken Sweater
This little sweater was made with the unique shape of a chicken in mind. It fastens with two buttons on the sides. This sample was made with Isaac’s Colorways Merino Blend.
Size: This was designed for a medium sized hen. It measures 8 ½ inches across the breast at the widest point.
Gauge: 21 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in stockinette
Materials:
120 yards (110 meters), 1.6 oz (46 grams) DK weight yarn (Light #3)
Size 6 (4 mm) needles (can be straight or circular)
Stitch holders or short circular needle (to hold neckline stitches)
Yarn needle
4 buttons ½” shank
Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
m1 = make one: With left needle pick up thread between last and next stitch inserting front to back. With right needle knit back loop.
mp1 = make one purl-wise: Move yarn to front. With left needle pick up thread between last and next stitch inserting front to back. With right needle purl back loop.
k2tog = knit two together
p2tog = purl two together
ssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit.
Neckline notes:
This pattern was designed to knit both shoulders at once after the neckline split. This will require attaching yarn and working with two sources a yarn while finishing the shoulders. Since it is a small number of rows this can be accomplished with the same skein of yarn as the body by attaching the other end of it when the neckline split begins.
When working with the two sources of yarn, at the neck in the center of the row, always switch sources of yarn so that the yarn never crosses the neckline.
You will be moving stitches to a holder on both sides of the neck on each row. If you use holders that can only be loaded from one direction, you will need two. You can use a short circular needle or equal or lesser size to hold the neck stitches to be able to move stitches from either side.

I definily have to try one of this!
Thank you to share!

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but when/why would one need a sweater for a chicken?
When one is molting in very cold weather.
To protect her from the rooster, who plucks her feathers while he is inseminating her. She is now bald. I would prefer a simple stitch, tho. She really won’t appreciate the cable pattern.
Yes! Cold weather protection for a chicken whose molting is out of control!
I wish the pattern was simpler as I’m a beginning knitter… I’m still going to give the pattern a go! I may make mine out of softer yarn as my hen’s skin is very tender.
I can’t wait to try it. Although, as said,it was thought for a chicken, I think it can fit and will look great on a small dog. Maybe adding another button on each side to close it up a little more. Thankyou!!!!!
Would the chicken sweater also fit a chihuahua?
The front would be the back on a dog. You probably wouldn’t need to make the neck as long and might just need to make sure the neck was loose enough to fit over the head.
I thought it was a hot water bottle cover
I am so disappointed that this is really for a hen. I thought it looked such a super sort of vest that I would like to try and make it for me! But my size is far larger than a hen’s. Do you have this in human size?
I’m sorry about your disappointment. I did base the diamond shape that I used on a vest for men: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pt8218-mans-vest
Would you be able to change the pattern to a simpler stitch? I have four hen’s that will most likely need sweaters this coming winter.
The simplest would be basic stockinette stitch with the 4 stitches of garter for the edges. To do this, keep the ribbing at the bottom and collar as I have it. On the rows, knit the first and last 4 stitches. Make the m1, ssk and k2tog stitches as given. On even rows, purl all the in-between stitches. On odd rows, knit the in-between stitches. For rows with mp1, convert those to m1. For rows with p2tog, change the first p2tog to ssk and the second p2tog to k2tog. Keep the button hole in the edging of row 3 and 21 of the front.
How would you size this pattern up for a larger chicken?
The easiest thing would be to use worsted (#4 medium) yarn and size 8 needles (5mm). This would give it a couple more inches in the breast measurement and would proportionally increase the size all over.
Thank you for the beautiful pattern – so lovely!!!!
would his fit a sydney silky terrier
I think the overall size would be about right. The adjustment you might need to make would be either leaving off the neck ribbing or making it much looser.
Looks like it wouldn’t need much alteration to fit nice and warmly on a baby -in the very cold weather?
I was thinking of exotic birds that have been rescued. They often have lost their feathers due to the lack of knowledge of their misguided owners.
