Quick V-stitch Scarf
You can make this simple little scarf in an hour with one skein of bulky yarn. Stripes of V-stitch and double crochet make this simple scarf far from plain.
The example is made with Lion Brand Jiffy, a bulky yarn. The scarf can be made with lighter weight yarns and smaller crochet hooks. You can add beginning chains in multiples of 3 to make the scarf the width you like.
Size:
The example is 5” by 52”
Materials:
3 oz (85 g)/135 yds of bulky yarn
Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
ch sp = chain space
dc = double crochet
v-stitch = dc, ch, dc in same stitch or space
Instructions:
Chain 16. The scarf can be made wider by adding 3 chains for each v-stitch wider.
After first row make all stitches in both loops.
Row 1: Dc in fourth chain. Dc in each chain to end of chain.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn. Dc in second dc, dc in each of dc across to end. Dc in top of turning chain.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn. V-stitch in third dc, (skip 2 dc, v-stitch in next dc) across to last dc and turning chain. Dc in top of turning chain.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn. V-stitch in each v-stitch ch sp across to last dc and turning chain. Dc in top of turning chain.
Row 5: Ch 3, turn. (Dc in the first dc of the v-stitch, dc in the chain space, dc in the other dc of the v-stitch) in each v-stitch across the row to the end. Dc in top of turning chain.
Row 6: Ch 3, turn. Dc in second dc, dc in each of dc across to end. Dc in top of turning chain.
Repeat rows 3-6 until scarf if the length desired. Finish off, secure and weave in end.
Thank you posting this! I was trying to do a v stitch scarf while at a drs office last week and couldn’t get the foundation right. I did try 16 chains, so maybe I just need a confidence boost of seeing it in print. I’m using LB quick and thick wool-ease. Thanks again!
I *love* that shade of green in the photo. May I ask what kind of yarn it is? Also, the instructions say “After first row make all stitches in both loops.” Does this indicate the first row should be worked in only one loop? I know some people do it that way…

I typically work the first row of any project in just one loop of the beginning chain. It wouldn’t hurt to work in two loops of the chain if you prefer.
I’m new at reading patterns. My Mother taught me basic crochet stitches that I do by memory. I want to learn how to do other things and that includes reading patterns. I’m wondering what you mean working in two loops of the chain. I have arthritis in my hands and sometime when it calls for chain 3 then work from the circle it can become difficult.
I think you are referring to when I say “After first row make all stitches in both loops.” By default, when working across the prior row of crochet, you make stitches in one loop of the top of the prior row. If you turn the work, you usually work in the front loop that faces you. If you are working in the round and therefore not turning the work, you usually work in the back loop. This creates a little horizontal line with the loops that aren’t used. Sometimes that line is desireable. In the case of this scarf, I wanted it to be completely reversible and also to be very sturdy, so have specified to use both of the top loops of the prior row when working stitches.

I made 21 chains to convert this to a cowl. For some reason after the the 2nd row of V stitches, when went on to do the dc stitches I seemed to have lost a few stitches.
Any suggestions?
Chains should be added in sets of three, so I would think you’d have needed to start with 22 chains, which would have made 20 dc on the dc rows and 6 v-stitches with a dc on either end on the v-stitch rows. Starting with 21 chains, how many v-stitches and end dc stitches do you have on your last v-stitch row?

But then it tapered due to lesser no. of stitches. So frogged it but will restart with 22 chains. Thx

I tried the k hook it suggested but found that using the smaller h hook gave me better quality of stiches..this is my 1st try on a pattern and I surprised myself ..its really pretty..I even did it with a smaller thread with beads and ..well to say the least I started making it as a gift but ..its too pretty to give away. .I love it! I picked this pattern as I wanted something easy and quick to do for my daughter who has just given me 5 days notice of a trip to Oslo and ‘please could I make her a scarf’!!! I have done the v stitch before and it grows very quickly but I’ve never put rows of trebles (uk) in between. I think it looks great and makes such a difference for such a simple change. I’m doing 4 rows of v stitch between 2 rows of trebles.
If I wanted to make a hat to match this scarf, how would I go about it?
Obviously working in the round would change the way the pattern looks.

It’s all v-stitch, but would coordinate with the scarf. If you wanted it to look more alike you could probably replace rows in the hat with dc stitches.

Can this pattern be used for an infinity scarf by connecting the ends together?
